Your brand isn't showing up in AI answers because it isn't in the sources the engine reads, and each engine reads different sources. ChatGPT retrieves through Bing, Claude searches through Brave, Perplexity runs its own live index, and Google AI Overviews pull from Google's rankings.
If that sounds like a niche problem, it isn't. I pulled the data from 1,600+ prompts tracked in AEO Copilot: 86.5% of non-branded prompts return no brand mention in any of the 4 engines. Invisible is the default state, not the exception.
The fix depends on which version of the problem you have. There are 3.
First, diagnose which problem you have
You show up nowhere. The most common case. When someone asks "best [your category] for [your customer]", none of the 4 engines name you. This is not an AI problem, it is a sourcing problem: the pages the engines pull answers from (roundups, comparison articles, review sites, community threads) do not mention you either. No index can surface a brand its sources never name.
You show up in 1 engine and not the others. In our data, 62% of non-branded mentions happen in exactly 1 engine. Not 2, not 3. This is an index gap: you rank in the index that engine reads and nowhere else. A brand that ranks on Google but is thin on Bing and Brave shows up in Google AI Overviews and vanishes everywhere else.
You show up for "is [brand] legit" but not for category questions. Branded prompts in our dataset get mentioned 100% of the time, because the brand name is in the question. That number measures reputation, not visibility. If this is you, your problem is not being found, it is being brought up unprompted, and that is a different fight.
Once you know which case you are in, the engine-by-engine breakdown below tells you where to focus.
!How ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite differently: citation style, sources, and how to win each engine
Why my brand isn't showing in ChatGPT
ChatGPT only cites sources when a question triggers web search. Its default answers come from training data with no retrieval at all, so a newer or smaller brand may simply not exist in what the model "knows". When search does trigger, retrieval runs on Bing's index plus OpenAI's licensed publishers (OpenAI documents this).
So there are 2 ways to be missing: the model never learned you, and Bing does not rank you.
Where to focus:
- Check your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Unindexed on Bing means unfindable for ChatGPT search. This takes 10 minutes and most teams have never done it.
- Make your entity unambiguous: consistent brand name, a clear "what we do" sentence on the homepage, same description across your site, LinkedIn, and directories.
- Earn mentions on pages Bing already ranks for your category queries. ChatGPT cites the page, and you need to be named on it.
Why my brand isn't showing in Claude
Claude searches through Brave Search, not Google or Bing (Anthropic's web search docs). If you have never checked how you rank on Brave, you have never checked your Claude visibility. Claude is also the most selective citer of the 4: fewer sources per answer, each tied to an exact quoted passage, with a preference for primary and verifiable pages.
Where to focus:
- Search your category queries on search.brave.com. If you are absent there, that is the whole explanation.
- Publish content that reads like a primary source: named author, real data, claims a careful reader can verify. Thin listicle rewrites do not get quoted by an engine that cites exact passages.
- Keep your key pages crawlable and fast. Brave's index is smaller than Google's, and it is less forgiving of pages it struggles to fetch.
Why my brand isn't showing in Perplexity
Perplexity runs live retrieval on its own index for every single query and cites on nearly every answer. It weighs freshness and community content heavily: in Profound's analysis of 680 million citations, Reddit was its most cited domain. A brand with a stale blog and no community presence is invisible to exactly the sources Perplexity trusts.
Where to focus:
- Put a direct answer in the first paragraph of your key pages, with a visible date. Perplexity quotes pages it can extract cleanly.
- Show up where your category gets discussed: Reddit threads, comparison discussions, review sites. Not as an ad, as a named option people mention.
- Refresh your money pages. A page last touched 2 years ago loses to a current one on an engine that rewards recency.
Why my brand isn't showing in Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews are built from Google's own rankings. Google issues multiple related sub-queries (they call it query fan-out) and assembles the answer from pages that rank for them. Google states plainly that there are no special requirements and no special markup: if you are not eligible to rank with a snippet, you are not eligible for the AI Overview.
Where to focus:
- Classic SEO, unglamorous as that sounds. The overview cites pages that already rank.
- Cover the sub-questions around your main query on the same page or a tight cluster: pricing, alternatives, "for [audience]" variants. Fan-out means Google is searching for those too.
- Ignore anyone selling you "AI Overview schema". Google says it does not exist, and our data shows no shortcut around ranking.
The 1 fix that works on all 4 engines
In our dataset, only 5.1% of non-branded prompts surface a brand in all 4 engines. Those brands share 1 trait: the category cannot be written about without naming them. They are on the roundups, the comparison pages, the review sites, and in the community threads. Every index finds them because every index reads at least some of those pages.
The engine-specific work above decides where you show up first. The list pages decide whether you show up at all. If you only have time for 1 thing, earn your place on the pages every engine cites.

FAQ
Why does my brand show up in ChatGPT but not in Perplexity?
Different indexes and different source preferences. ChatGPT retrieves through Bing and licensed publishers; Perplexity runs its own index and leans on fresh and community content. Ranking in 1 does not transfer to the other. In our data, 62% of brand mentions happen in exactly 1 engine.
Does schema markup get me into Google AI Overviews?
No. Google states there is no special markup or machine-readable file for AI Overviews. Eligibility is the same as ranking in normal search with a snippet.
How long does it take to start showing up?
Weeks, not days. New mentions on list pages and community threads need to be crawled and picked up by each index separately. Perplexity reacts fastest because it retrieves live; ChatGPT's training-data layer moves slowest.
Is being invisible in AI answers normal?
Statistically, yes. 86.5% of the non-branded prompts tracked in AEO Copilot return no brand mention in any engine. That is also why fixing it is worth something: most competitors have not.
