If a client asks "what is AEO?", they usually mean: how do we show up when people ask AI a question. That's the short version. Here's the longer one.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting a brand mentioned when AI tools answer questions about its category. That covers ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and the next twenty things that launch in the next twelve months.
If someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best invoicing tool for freelancers" and your client makes invoicing software, AEO is the work that decides whether your client shows up in that answer.
Traditional SEO targets the ten blue links Google shows in its results. AEO targets the paragraph the AI writes above (or instead of) those links. Same question, different answer surface.
A 30-second example
Open ChatGPT. Ask it: "What's the best AEO tool for agencies?"
It will name two or three tools. Maybe AEO Copilot, Peec.ai, Profound. Maybe just one. Maybe none of yours.
AEO is the work that gets your tool into that list, and the work that keeps you there as the model changes.
Why AEO matters now
Three things changed at once.
AI search adoption hit critical mass. ChatGPT has over 200 million weekly users. Perplexity passed 15 million. Google AI Overview now shows on a growing share of US queries. Your customers are asking these tools instead of Googling.
The answers are short and confident. Google gives you ten options to click through. ChatGPT gives you one or two recommendations. The brand mentioned wins. The rest don't.
The optimization layer is wide open. Most brands haven't done any AEO work. The bar to rank is low right now. That window will close.
If you ignore AEO for the next twelve months, the competitors who didn't will be the default answer when buyers ask the AI a question about your category.
AEO vs SEO
The two work together, not against each other.
SEO is about ranking on a search engine result page. AEO is about being cited in an answer. They share a lot of fundamentals: a crawlable site, clear page structure, schema markup, content that answers real questions.
They diverge in a few places.
SEO rewards keyword targeting and backlink authority. AEO rewards entity clarity (does the AI know who you are?), citation by authoritative third parties (does the AI's training data mention you?), and direct quotability (can the AI extract a clean answer from your page?).
You can rank #1 on Google and be invisible to ChatGPT. The two channels measure different things.
AEO vs GEO
You'll see "Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)" used as a synonym. It mostly is. Both terms describe the same work: getting your brand into AI-generated answers.
AEO emphasizes the answer surface. GEO emphasizes the generative process. In practice, the playbook is the same. Don't get hung up on the term.
How AEO actually works
There are two layers, and they feed each other.
The technical layer answers a yes/no question: can the AI tools read your site? That covers a working sitemap, no aggressive bot blocking, schema markup that names your product clearly, and the new llms.txt file that tells AI crawlers what your site is about. Most AEO work starts here because most sites have at least one technical issue.
The content layer answers a harder question: does your content actually answer the questions buyers ask? That means writing pages that respond to real prompts (not keyword-stuffed listicles), using clean entity names, including comparison tables and pricing where applicable, and getting cited on the third-party sites the AI tools trust.
The cleanest technical setup won't help if no AI tool has anything useful to extract from your pages. The best content won't help if the AI can't crawl your site.
How to start AEO in three steps
You can spin in circles for weeks. Or you can do this.
Step one: figure out where you stand. Pick five to ten prompts a real customer would ask. Run them through ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. Note which mention you, which mention competitors, and which mention no one in your category. That's your baseline.
Step two: fix the technical basics. Run a free AEO checker. Fix what it flags: missing schema, broken sitemap, blocked crawlers, weak meta tags. Unglamorous, high leverage.
Step three: pick three prompts and write directly to them. Don't write for keywords. Write for the actual question. If buyers ask "what's the best invoicing tool for designers", write a page that compares the real options honestly. AI tools cite content that reads like a balanced answer, not a sales page.
Common AEO mistakes
Writing for SEO and hoping it ranks for AEO too. It rarely does. AEO content needs to be more direct, more comparative, more honest about tradeoffs.
Tracking impressions instead of mentions. SEO tools report impressions. AEO tools report whether your brand shows up in answers. Those are different signals. Use a tracker built for AEO.
Treating it as a one-time audit. Models change. Citations shift. Competitors publish. AEO is a monitoring problem, not a fix-once problem.
AEO tools to know
The current AEO tool landscape is small but growing.

AEO FAQ
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No. SEO targets ranking on a search results page. AEO targets being mentioned in an AI-generated answer. The skills overlap. The success metric is different.
Is AEO worth the effort if I already rank well on Google?
Yes. The buyer journey is changing. A growing share of high-intent searches happens in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews. Ranking on Google does not guarantee being mentioned by the AI.
Can a small business do AEO without an agency?
Yes. The technical fixes are basic. A free AEO checker like AEO Copilot's free audit tool walks you through what to fix. The content side takes more work, but it's the same content you'd write for SEO anyway, framed as honest answers.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Two to eight weeks for technical fixes. Three to six months for new content to get cited at scale. Faster than SEO. Slower than paid ads.
What does AEO cost?
Free if you do it yourself. A monitoring tool runs anywhere from free (AEO Copilot has a free tier) to several thousand dollars a month (enterprise tools like Profound). Agencies charge between $1,000 and $10,000 per month for AEO retainers.
